even use this highly sensitive measuring device to monitor your skeletal muscle and resting metabolism to keep weight off. Meanwhile, a memory display helps you track your progress.

Detailed Measurement
The weight display measures weight up to 300 pounds in .2-pound increments, while body fat percentage can be measured from 5 to 60 percent in .1 percent increments. Meanwhile, skeletal muscle percentage is measured from 5 to 50 percent, also in .1 increments. Visceral fat classifications are available, too; the device will tell you if your visceral fat levels are normal or high.

One of the keys to weight loss and management is tracking your body mass index, or BMI. The HBF-500 rates your BMI from 7.0 to 90.0 in .1 increments. BMI is classified at three levels: underweight, normal, overweight, and obese. You can also assess your resting metabolism; the device measures your resting calorie consumption from 385 to 5000 kcal in .1 kcal increments.

All of the measurements taken by the HBF-500 can be stored in memory for later comparison with your current statistics and goals. The device can display information from up to three months prior to the current day.

Made for Just about Everyone
The HBF-500 is set up to provide measurements for folks of nearly all heights (3'4" to 6' 6-3/4") and nearly all adult ages (18 to 80 years). Measurements are customized for males and females, as well.

Power and Dimensions
The HBF-500 runs on four AA batteries, and you can expect about a year of battery life when the device is used four times a day. The handheld portion of the device measures 6.1 x 11.8 x 1.4 inches (L x W x H). The main unit measures 12.8 x 11.8 x 2.2 inches (L x W x H). The unit weighs 4.7 pounds.

Q&A - Fitness Monitors
What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method?
Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The monitor sends an extremely weak electrical current through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. The weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The monitor is calculated by a formula that includes five factors; electric resistance, height, weight, age and gender.
What is visceral fat?
Visceral fat is located around the organs. Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased level of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common conditions such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sedentary life style causes excess visceral fat, and exercise can reduce it quicker than subcutaneous fat (fat located under skin).
What is resting metabolism?
Resting metabolism is the energy to maintain vital functions and it counts 60 to 70% of total energy consumption. Knowing your resting metabolism can help your dietplan. If you can increase daily activity while keeping food intake at resting metabolism level, you can lose weight.
What is skeletal muscle?
Skeletal muscle is muscle attached to the bones that is used to move the body. If you do weight loss without exercise, you may lose skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle is important to maintain your resting metabolism as well as your functionality. Monitoring skeletal muscle during weight loss is key to avoid weight rebound in the future.

4 out of 5 stars good product   August 30, 2010

works great, it has a slight difference from the professional fat monitor that my doctor has, but is almost accurate.

4 out of 5 stars Works well   August 27, 2010

I was tired of having a scale that didn't match the one at my doctor's office. This one appears to be more accurate. The settings for Fat Monitor and BMI are handy though I don't use them much. I'm just trying to drop a few pounds and this gives me insight on how I'm doing.

3 out of 5 stars Not as accurate as I would have liked   August 23, 2010
J. Chan (Dublin, CA)
I base a lot of my purchasing decisions on customer reviews and thought this fat monitor and scale would be decent because of its ratings. It measures weight accurately. BMI is calculated based on your weight and height, so this function is also "accurate." I was frankly a little disappointed because it measured my body fat incorrectly - my body fat was way higher than what is reasonable.

Body fat percentage may be inaccurate in the following situations (and this is from the instruction manual):

- Children
- Elderly people
- People with a fever
- Body builders or highly trained athletes
- Patients undergoing dialysis
- Patients with osteoporosis who have very low bone density
- Women who are pregnant
- Post-menopausal women
- People having swelling

1) I'm an Asian female, so maybe my bone density is lower than the average American. I don't know how this would effect the reading.
2) The fat loss monitor utilizes the BI (Biological Impedance) method, so I'm not sure how accurate that is and if it actually works well with my body type.

In conclusion, this product is okay. I think this weight loss tool is good for keeping track of your weight and BMI, but I'd think twice about it for body fat percentage (which is why I bought it). You're better off with measuring tape and using a body fat calculator online: [...]
