Success Story? You tell me... But... August 13, 2010 L. Plasse (Millville,MA USA) This little devise gets high praises(with conditions) from me, here's why. First, I'm not a diabetic but I have had very high triglycerides for a very long time. After doing a lot of research I decided to reduce my consumption of carbohydrates to about =<50 grams per day. I monitored my blood glucose several times a day.
The monitor comes with a handy caring pouch and even includes a small log sheet if you need to keep track of your readings. The monitor keeps the test results internally for reference, very nice feature. I bought an inexpensive lancing devise (Relion) only because it was small enough to fit inside the pouch. I also managed to fit a small pencil in for logging the results on the little log sheet. If all that weren't enough, I also keep a few fresh needles for the finger lance.
Now, the whole deal could fit in my pocket all nicely self contained. I bought several of these from, you know who mart.To be honest though, I did have a few strips that malfunctioned(usually four of five strips per kit)on me with each kit I bought.
The really nice thing is, within the last four months I've managed to lower my triglycerides from 385 to 75 at my last check and that's without taking cholesterol medicine. Because I don't have diabetes and my insurance wouldn't pay for a monitor and especially because of the expensive strips from other brands I decided to buy the Side-Kick on my own, thanks to it being affordable. Now, here's the real kicker (pun definitely intended) I no longer need to take cholesterol medicine and that's with my doctor's approval and amazement!
During the time of my new lifestyle change I managed to keep my blood glucose within a range of 70 to 105 mg/L. My lab A1c measured 5.3 (95.4 mg/dL) which confirms to me, I was averaging with the same results of my home testing blood results as with the results from the lab.
For someone like myself, I can't vouch for super accuracy but for the affordable price it's a tool that can alert you to foods that are having an obviously negative effect on your blood glucose levels.
Update:08-19-2010
As previously mention about the problem about some of the test strips malfunctioning, I called the company to express my less than 100% satisfaction with the product. I spoke to a representative and provided him with the Lot Number of the monitor.
I explained the problem in detail, he asked that I try to duplicate it again while on the phone, naturally , problems will never happen when you want them to. His suggestion was to call again if the problem should happen again which I'm sure it will. Can't say I'm satisfied with that solution. My thinking, no need to send me a new kit just send me a dozen test strips and I'd be satisfied.
My first rating was five stars now 3.
It really annoys me when a company doesn't try to build customer relationship and loyalty, that's when I start thinking of taking my business elsewhere...
Good Basic System July 1, 2010 K. K. T. Coyle (Grants, NM) I bought this system for my Father-in-Law who recently moved in with us after being overseas for many years. We were unable to find it at Wal-mart after the first time or buy it online anywhere but Amazon. Amazon comes through again with a VERY reasonable price and free shipping. This system is very compact, the strips and meter are one in the same. He keeps a written log rather than anything digital and is just developing personal control over his diabetes. There is no way to download to a computer, but does fit in a small carrying case well with the lancet etc... This is a good system for someone who prefers the most basic meter, and it is very affordable for the non-insured.
Solid Servicable Glucometer March 14, 2010 Scott Sturgeon (Killeen, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Purchased the Sidekick because my 2 year old Acucheck Compact Plus started reading 65 points lower than my sugar actually was. The purchase of the Sidekick was to tide me over until I could get my insurance company to purchase me a new Acucheck (they won't). The Sidekick works well, is tiny compared to the Acucheck and has cheaper supplies. Test strips are available for this meter at WalMart. While a solid functional meter, it does have a few less electronic features than the Acucheck. The Sidekick keeps your last 30 tests or so in memory but doesn't store the date and time like the Acucheck. The Acucheck had other features but none of which I ever used. Other than that it works every bit as well, I strongly reccomend it.
